Uncle Sam's History in a Brief Time Line;
1758: Edward and Lucy Wilson lived in Menotomy, now Arlington MA, and had thirteen children.
1766: Sam Wilson was born on the 13th of September.
1775: On April 18th Paul Revere rode past the Wilson farm on his famous ride
1780: The Wilson family moved to Mason NH, Sam's older brothers enlisted in the army leaving Sam as his father's right hand man on the farm.
1782-1783: After the war, Sam's brothers returned. Seeking better opportunities, several of the brothers decided to relocate.
1789: One February day, when Sam was 22 and his brother Ebenezer was 27, they began a long walk to Troy NY to seek their fortunes. That summer, they began brick making in Troy using clay from a bank on the west slope of Mount Ida. Around this time they built a small farmhouse.
1793: Sam and his brother entered the meat packing business located between the present Adams and Jefferson Streets and east of River St. They also erected a home on the NW corner of Second and Ferry Streets and a dock at the foot of Terry Street for their own sloops.
1797: Sam returned to Mason NH to marry Betsy Mann. They returned to Troy where they had four children, two of whom died at a young age.
1812: Wilson contracted to furnish beef and pork to the Army. His employees joked that the initials "U.S." on the packing barrels stood for Uncle Sam. " Uncle Sam who? Why Uncle Sam of course! 'Tis he that is feeding the whole army!" From here the legend grew.
1854: Sam Wilson died in Troy, NY on July 31. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy NY.
